Where there is water; one can always find Life for that is what Life needs in order to thrive. Even the tiniest drop can create Life or prolong it; Water is such an interesting thing though most of the time it is wasted in such things as bathing or swimming. Nothing that a good dust bath or wallow in the mud could take care of, but many creatures soiled the water with their filth, yet the others that drank from it didn't care all that much. As long as it cooled their quivering and tired bodies; it could be poison for all they care.
But in Africa, there was little water outside of the Congo and the main rivers; so in areas like this water was a dire necessity that few had access to. And it just so happened that this very oasis was one of the few water sources in all the land; so if any creature wanted a drink; they would have to make it past him. He was a striped Hyena that called himself Shaka; his shaggy, grey coat covered his back and his striped legs made him look somewhat ridiculous, but having one of the strongest jaws in the entire World does have it's few perks.
And to say more; Shaka was not even from these lands. He hailed from the North of Africa, but wandered South in search of new lands that he could make his own. He was sick of how his old pack operated; always bolting at the sight of a lone lion and never realizing that as a group; the lion was no match for them. So Shaka left them and had journeyed until he could go no further and no further was at this very oasis. Tentatively, the stripped hyena advanced on the pool of crystal, clear water and after a few minutes of through observation; Shaka hastily marked out that this land was his turf.
Now with that settled, Shaka plunged his head into the water and greedily gulped down as much as he could before running out of air. Pulling his head out of the water, Shaka was in such a state of bliss that he could barely notice if anything was nearby. The water that the hyena could swallow was rushing down his throat and the excess water sifted through his jaws and wet his fur coat.
Letting his four foot long body collapse onto the ground, the 100 pound hyena was tempted with the thought of sleep, for it was still day and it was at night that Shaka best operated. It was at night that he could get the jump on any lion and gorge himself on any beast that dared close their eyes for the night. Laughing to himself, Shaka couldn't wait for the night to come and that was when the time was right; to feast. Though as his laughter died down, his eyes began to droop and the hyena thought to himself, 'This is the ideal life; I have territory, I have water. Now all I need is sleep and the flesh of others; then I am content.'

There it was again. A long streamline of water, glittering like a tassel of foil against the sand in the dry heat of the Zimbabwe land. The mid-day sun was still ripe in the sky, chewing on the backs of the animals that dared to walk under it's wrathful scorch. In the state of for better or worse, this was certainly worse, for one of the figures under the whip of the sun was a pale Lioness, known by all who met her as Fana.
She had been certain this was only another mirage, and upon making her way closer her stomach gave a deep rumble in anticipation of whether her blue-grey eyes deceived her yet again. Her coat was sleek with sweat, and some patches were darker than others where the dirt had scuffed up under her massive paws and settled there in her otherwise cloud-white fur.
The heavens gave you your body my little sbukini [kitten], while the earth gave you your mind. Her mother's voice echoed in Fana's mind, and a frown caked that matted forehead of hers while flies irritated her to no end, buzzing and clinging to her nostrils. The heavens did no good then.. She muttered in her head, blinking her stinging eyes and flicking her long tail in annoyance.
Her furry ears rotated back and forward as she began to pick up sounds at the oasis ahead, and she could not help but track the most putrid smell to have hit her skilled nose in weeks. Hyena. Although the scent make her skin crawl, it was not as bad as it would have been had there been more than two, and so Fana was certain the oasis was real now, and also sure there was not a high number of these creatures nearby.
Loping across the burning sand to the oasis, she let the cracked pads of her paws seep into shade and relief swept over her as she collapsed under a bed of shade to the edge of the little paradise. A gracious yawn opened her jaws wide, displaying all the bone-crunching power a young adult lioness of 111 kilograms was expected to have. With a shake of her coat to rid herself of the flies she turned her head, surveying the scene before her in an attempt to find a body to put the Hyena scent too.
A few more seconds and she would be at the lip of the water, swallowing a bellyfull to soothe her split lips and empty insides. Fana was very thirsty, and no amount of attitude from any creature would stop her quenching her travel, even if she was forced to shift that creature's anatomy.

The eternal bliss that was known to Shaka as sleep was just about to take hold when an odor rancid to his nostrils permeated his surroundings. It was an odor that he had not smelled since he came down from the North; the scent of the Hyenas' competitor. The scent of a lion. But what was one doing here; he had clearly marked out this small patch of land as his own and yet by the scent of the beast it was drawing closer. The striped Hyena lay as still as he possibly could until the intruder was in eye sight, and what an intruder it was.
This lioness looked about twice as fit as those mangy kitties that he had to face in the North Lands, but then again he was mangy and lean for food was always scarce there. Would it be wise to take on this predator without a pack to aid him if he needed it? Shaka was no coward, but he knew when he had met his match. The Striped Hyena was about to make a run for it and try his fortunes else where when he noticed the lioness was about to lap up his water. The notion that the beast was ignoring his clearly marked turf enraged the smaller creature, but Shaka was a hyena and they are known for doing insane things.
Shaka rose his frame from the ground and small flames started to dance about his eyes. In his mind he could hear the roars of lions from the past and the yelping of pups being slaughtered in the endless wars over terriotory. Well this day would be different; this Hyena would not run in the face of danger. It was high time to show the lions that Hyenas would not be pushed about, and if he were to make a stand; Shaka knew that this would be the best place to do so.
Thrusting away any final doubts, Shaka leaped to his feet and dashed at the lioness from the left. Any fly that dared landed on him while he was dozing in the Sun was forcefully flung off his coat as he ran for the interloper, and as the distance closed; Shaka wanted to drive off the lioness more than ever. When he was within three feet of the lioness that seemingly craved his water, Shaka sank the notorious, bone-crushing jaws of his kind into the Lioness' left shoulder. The canines puctured through flesh and fur, but where not deep enough to scrap the bone in any serious manner.
The Hyena quickly releashed his jaws' grip on the lioness' shoulder and dashed in front of her to block her path to the water; a piece of bloody fur dangling in his mouth. Growling and laughing at the same time in the warning of his people, Shaka paced nervously about the larger beast. 'You; Interloper. Either you were born without a sense of smell, or you choose to ignore that is land is mine. I didn't travel all the way from North Africa where there is constant war between our peoples to have what is mine be used by a stranger. I shall be merciful this day; turn back now. Laugh if you wish; but unfortunately for you my bite is worse than my bark. So turn back lioness; you shall have to find water elsewhere.'

Large paws shifted the slightly damp soil by the water's edge as the lioness lowered her great form. Her muscles swam around her poised shoulder blades, toning her coat with a good amount of physical power. She had not been in a brawl with creatures, nor a heated fight with her own kind. The only running about Fana had done was hunting.
Her furred ears swiveled around as she heard small feet on earth, belting toward her. Her head turned, but too late, and the beast of a little critter holding the horrid scent bit down on that muscle over her shoulder. A roar left her mighty jaws and they came apart in a snarl, while her ears lay flat against her skull in aggression.
The hyena paced before her, successfully making a barrier between her and the water she had been so close to tasting. His striped legs and rather gruff grey coat told her his species, but no matter, for all hyena's had but one key attribute they all shared. That, was their jaws.
Her shoulder bled from the holes the hyena's teeth had inflicted, turning her coat reddish brown over the shoulder. She growled menacingly and her blue-grey eyes flashed. The lioness was far from happy, as was her belly. Had he not been such a mongrel in battle, Fana would have considered eating him right there and then. Though she knew this would be far more involved than a simple bite and snap.
His bite was given before his bark, and as he went on to threaten her, she tested the ground with her claws, parting her lips so her thickest canines were visible. "Oh hyena, laughing would only bring me closer to your kind, and I would not want that at all." Her whiskers twitched in anticipation. "It seems to me that it is no challenge for your bite to overcome your bark." She pushed, shifting her weight forward as her tail's black end flickered dangerously.
"This land is not yours, otherwise your repulsive odor would spread through every clump of soil, float over every ripple of water, and taint the hot wind between every tree." And finally, answering the talk of his travel she said, "I did not travel to a point of exhaustion simply to have some unshaven ham order me to leave grounds of refreshment. Stand down pup, for this is not your day." She warned, as a low rumble rolled through her chest.

'I am no pup Lioness; if I were you I would choose my words better. It would be wise not to aggrivate me; I may be an unsheaven ham but if so then why do you hesitate? Could such a strong beast take on as lowly a worm as I or do you lack the nerve? So I think that this is my day Lioness; take your own advice and stand down', yapped Shaka into the Lioness's mind though his true feelings on the matter were well masked. Shake the Striped Hyena was scared out of his mind; never had he fought against a lioness of this caliber and yet it was either fight or flee; sink or swim.
What was he to do? If he were to fight this lioness; his only chance to succeed was to disable her immediately by destroying her forepaws. Without those she was as dead as a fish out of water, but then again she wouldn't just stand by and let him break her bones. He could try and back behind her to pounce on her back in an attempt to break her spine, though the chances were slim that he would be able to get behind her. The thought of running was growing larger in the mind of the Hyena, but he stil had some options; even if some of them were rather unorthodox.
The wiley Hyena retreated so that his rear paws were sinking into the water and his front were just on the front of the shore. Something the Lioness had said had given him an idea that would perhaps deter her from taking what was his. Shaka threw his head in the water and took one, last gulp before he began what he thought might work. The Striped Hyena's left hindleg rose and he began to urninate in the once pure water. He threw his body into the water so the dust on his coat clogged the water with it's presence; flies fled his body the minute it came into contact with the water. Between the urnination and the contamination of the water so that it would appear only appetizing to such a filthy creature as himself; Shaka admired his handiwork while laughing at the lioness.
"Thought that you had beaten me didja? Well didja think that I would do exactly what you wanted me to do? With my excrete and bodily dusts polluting the water the only being that could tolerate that is myself. So my stentch has spread to every corner of this oasis. Now that we have settled that this is mine; for the final time leave or I will attack a second time."

Fana was in no mood to take his words to heart, in fact she instead was watching the blinding flashes of the sun in the ripples of the oasis pool, almost distracting her completely if the scent of the hyena before her had not still been very prominent in the air. She flared her nostrils and exhaled roughly, dust entering the air.
The lioness definitely had the nerve to take on the small beast in front of her, thought she simply lacked the will. Frowning at the inviting water behind the irritating creature, Fana let a disgruntled growl penetrate her deep throat once more, hardly noticing his words more than trying to figure out a way around him.
In the space of quiet between his finished speech and her calculations, the lioness certainly began to feel the heat beating down on her body again. Aggravation was bubbling in her insides, making that empty belly of hers grumble and the focus of her grey eyes to grow feverishly determined. The hyena was treading very dangerous ground, for although Fana was never usually the type of lioness to attack without fair reason, her patience was just about ready to crumble into the soil beneath her weighty body.
As the hyena backed up, Fana's ears rotated forward, curious as to why he had suddenly taken the choice to retreat. Her massive jaws closed in contentment as she also stepped forward, closer to the water, but her ears soon returned to their threatening position against her skull as she saw just exactly what the dirty little runt had been planning.
When he started laughing, the slits of black in the lioness's eyes engulfed the colour of her irises and she let out a loud roar, enough to quake fear through every animal in the oasis. Get OUT! The bridge of her nose wrinkled from her enormous jaws being revealed in a fur-raising growl. Before another movement could be made, Fana's right fore paw connected with the side of the hyena's face, knocking his jaw haywire as her pencil-thick claws raked across his cheek and eye.
The impact of her blow was enough to knock the hyena right out of the water, and Fana took this chance to take his place and face her bristling back to the water, her tail-tip skimming the water in an irascible manner. Her front faced him in a low stance of fury, and oh, what a mistake he had made. To pollute the only available water to a thirsty - now angered - lioness was almost signing one's own death warrant, for now her whole unhappy entirety was focused on him.
His blood was all that would quench her thirst now, and she was well fired up for a brawl.
